1982 Peugeot Pro 10

According to the 1982 Peugeot brochure: "The Pro 10 is a Special Order bicycle; customer may specify certain equipment (*) on his order." In 1974, at the same time that Raleigh created the Specialist Bicycle Development Unit or SBDU, Peugeot developed the Prestige division with the designation PY. Similar to Raleigh, PY bicycles were made available to the Peugeot cycling team and the public. The PY10 CP (Course Professionelle) was the top of the line model made from Reynolds 531 Extra Legere (SL) or 753 tubing (only in 1980). The PRO 10 was the last model built by the Prestige division and the prospective owner could customize it as they wished - well almost. The 1982 PRO 10 shown here was produced for the US market and was similar to the 1980-81 PY10 CP except for the "direct coupling" front derailleur. It is a beautifully made frameset whose craftsmanship can only appreciated when up close and disassembled. The only drawback is the chrome, which has blistered in some places - not anywhere good as the chrome on British bikes. According to Peter Kohler, 1982 was the last year for the Prestige division, having operated for only 8 years, or so. I can say without hesitation this is one of the best built framesets, and the 8 month, or so, waiting period for one of these would have been worth it. They are certainly rare.
